Timing question.

Hey,

Long story short, thanks to me letting someone I know I shouldn't have work on my car, the fucking timing belt is in the wrong position so I can't find out the timing. Now, as he also took the harmonic balancer off, would the marks on the harmonic balancer be lined up with the ones on the crank still? Would the keyway or bolt pattern or something mean there's only one possible way to line that up? Just seeing if I can put the belt on to match the harmonic balancer marking, or if I need to re-align the harmonic balancer too.

This cunt claims to be SUCH a good mechanic that he can tell perfect timing by just listening, hence why he didn't bother to line it up.

Ideally I would like to have it running nicely by friday night.

Cheers,
Sean.

pitty you can't "hear" a motor running while your putting the belt on to get it on right, what a toss.
The balancer should line up to a key way so it can only go on one way, so yes you should be able to line up things using the markings on it.
Before you start the car turn it over by hand with a big socket or tire iron on the crank just to make sure nothing is going to hit. It pays to spend 2 minutes doing this then to bend all your valves.

Well, the water pump/alternator pulley i think it is with the timing marks on it can go on the balancer 6 different ways so can be a bit of a bastard if its not marked.gotta do trial and error to line it up again..haha,slap ur mechanic over the back of the head for me :p

Cam pulleys have a dot on them that lines up with a dot on the backplate when at/near TDC on #1 on the compression stroke (when the dizzy rotor is pointing to #1 electrode thingy).

The crank pulley only goes on one way. The pulley that bolts to the front of it can go on different ways. Get your cams lined up right and the right positon should be obvious.

Hope he hasn't been rotating cranks and cams with the timing belt off.

P.S. Rule #1 before doing any work that involved removing timing components, set the engine to TDC on piston #1.

Thanks for everyones replies. I've decided that, since this engine isn't going to be permanant anyway, I'll save time and just advance it a tad and go for a drive till I get it close enough to good.
