my zx is a 84 red targa top automatic with no mota

lucky enough to get one with out any major rust just a tiny hole in the boot under the seal

update on my motor
took cambelt cover off. the problem is the crank turns but the cams don't!
the belt isn't stripped. the crank shaft timing pully spins indipendent of the crank, so apparently some faliure in the keyway!!

since then found out my motor was a vg30e 87 turbo with non turbo parts that have been shoddily jammed on causing the awful tapping noise.which we origianlly thought was the harmonic balancer..

Did it do any valve damage?

Theres a couple of heads for sale, check the spotted for sale thread.

Turbo engine, with no turbo. That wouldn't be the quickest of cars, unless they replaced the pistons.

the damage is to the crank so absolutely need another engine!

thats interesting, my mate told me he thought my crank was a bit dodgy around the keyway, i didnt really believe him (didnt get a look for myself) but now im thinking maybe it is.. oh well, when i tear both engines down ill see.

new update
my car now starts and is more responsive then ever on the pedal still makin a racket but thats the broken key
Have ordered new keys broke the bank at $2.50 each lol
was given this advice by a friend so am going to give it a try
wish me luck:)
Get a new key, cheap as shit, get some devcon, and install the key and pulley onto back onto the motor after timing the belt up, using devcon to take up the bit that is removed from the crank. Do up the crank pulley bolt nice and tight, and use some green loctite on crank to crank pulley interface and she wont be moving again. Then crank over and comp test to check for bent valves. This wont cost much and wont take much time, and will at least give you something to drive until you want to go turbo down the track. If you got any questions ask away, thats what Id do before calling the motor fucked though.

apparently my car has lsd as there is 2 new black lines on the shed floor..never did that b4 was too gutless.

I've heard that open diffs will spin both wheels if you put enough power down. On a slippery concrete floor I dont think it would be too difficult.

So you've fixed the pulley then?

pulley not quiet fixed!!
my other halfs 5.7 V8 VT will only spin one wheel under brakes in the same shed. both spun in under quater of a turn!!!! also I dont think half throttle quiet qualifies as enough power...... how much does it take for a Z31 to lay rubber????? examples please??  Wink

Dunno. I only got to drive mine once.

If its LSD, someone had modified it. They cam from the factory with open diffs.

nissans are weird my other half had a 4cyl silvia with an lsd, short shift and 3 puk clutch,

mine's a bog stock manual NA and will spin both if both wheels have even grip.

when i first got mine, i floored it round a flat corner in the rain and it didnt spin..

did the same thing on an off-camber corner a little later that night, and one wheel spun, but not much lol.

but that was when i had different timing on each head lol.

when i mean it was gutless i really meant it  !!!!a granny on her shoprider could easily have beaten me i could walk faster lol seriously!!!!  if i tried to floor it .. my car would splutter and oh so slowly move
was never runnnin right .... hence i am now pleased it did wheel spin

my 300 would do one wheel and other times it would spin 2 it depends on the surface your on. the position of the weight over the wheels and the revs your putting down.
I got sick of trying to find a LSD and got my diff plasma welded($1500-$140) the guy that done it said that if i brake it i can get their work ute (vx 5.7 gen 3)
so i have been trying.
your burn-out also comes down to your drive line. clutch and the like.
i have found that the standard diff is great once welded.
i drive mine every day. takes about 3 minutes to get used to--your first corner LOL
the 300 should be able to sit on rev limiter roasting tyres if you want to put on a good show. well Cya

It didn,t last .... ( well the repair job is just fine )I some how mangaed to over heat the car now
the thermo fan didn,t turn on and the gage didn,t tell me i was getting hot grrrrrrrrr

Im gonna try selling my ZED.
get something old school would'nt mind a light blue HR Holden with a white roof rolling on 17s. well cya im currently fixing a leaking injector now i have gotten grease all over the key board. oh well all a part of owning a 21 year old turbo'd car.
IM JUST OVER IT AS SOON AS U FIX 1 THING SOMTHING ELSE STUFFS UP........its never ending...LOL

oh, thats no good!

look at the positives; you have an immaculate shell. im yet to see one as clean as yours in WA. you can always get another engine for it if the one you have now is a dud lol.

my car is getting a RB20 det with a 5 speed manual with brass button clutch as soon as i can get the money together and get to perth to pick it up

Well then. You're going to need a 200ZR cross member and a 200ZR sump from Japan. If your going to all that trouble, why not an RB25DET?

RB20DET is rated about the same as the V30ET for horsepower.

When it comes time to mount the scoop you bought off ebay I read this on z31.com

the sump is the same as a 3ltr patrol and the crossmember is not an issue as i have a friend who is going fabricate the mounts  Smile
sussed it all out before making and offer on the motor
which is coming out of a r32 gtst  
getting complete engine and gearbox for less then a rb25det would cost

same friend is mounting my scoop .... he owns his own panelbeater shop  Laughing
but will tell him the above quote thanks Smile

Interesting. The RB30 Patrol has a rear sump?  I never heard of anyone using a Patrol Sump before, maybe because they don't have the Patrol in the US?

How much is the RB costing you. I got one sitting on my garage floor that I plan to put in a 240Z one day.

nothin is left of the car now ... apparently someone from albany .... not me is takin the shell now .... at least now i can get my friend to pick it up on boxing day now .... instead of me having to go up with trailor etc but it was the shell with front damage only missing front seats , xhasust brakes wheels and a few other small parts

exuse the speelin mistakes i am half cut and hav the flu  lol

update ....
the work has begun .. my turbo scoop arrived on friday ...
my motor is coming on wednesday ... so the engine bay is being stripped tottaly as its getting resprayed before the new one goes in

motor is now out ...... have to clean out everything in the engine bay so i can paint it before putting in the motor .......

got sunburnt today taking all the little bits out of the engine bay ....
goin to shanes later this  week hopefully now to get the rust hole done ... and then she will be ready for a respray
cant decide on Phantom mica  or Met Blue ( it looks very purple ) lol  or kawaisaki green
at least its slowly coming along now

i would paint it orange with a black roof that looks cool.LOL
i dont know where i seen it but someone had a photoshopped purple over  black 84 300 that looked real tough. good luck with the install. are you painting with 2 pak as it will be more scratch resistant for when you go to do your engine transplant.

nah going acrylic easier to paint with and its going race spec with the paint job its gonna be black on top and on the bottom

i have sold my rb20 ( offer to good to refuse) and am purchasing a vg30det turbo
i have no idea if and what i will need to put it in but its got to be easier then the rb20

i believe you will need the loom & ecu from the vg30det and thats about it. dont take what i say for gospel tho, i think someone on here did this conversion, so see if you can get any info from him about it.

yeah getting the ecu not sure about the loom .... i here i need a crossmember still as the turbo and na are different

ahh yeah, that or a high mount.

when the turbo is mounted up high, like near the a/c compressor or something. usually only done when the turbo is too big to fit in the factory spot, or if theres clearance issues in a car that wasnt factory turboed, or for pure wank factor.

never understood why nissan didnt just use the same crossmember for NA & turbo tho, you'd think only making one for both cars would be cheaper Rolling Eyes

Because they couldn't make it fit probably.

I know the NA one doesn't fit on turbos, but a turbo one would fit NA's yeah?

wonder if theres a way to mod the NA one to fit.. I'll have a look at my NA one and my turbo one side by side after we move and i start the rebuild in a month or 2.

Its a bit of work.The only thing different is the location of the passenger engine mount,its moved forward towards the front of the car more.

Well, maybe not, since the engine you are getting is a VG30DET. The Z31 never had a VG30DET in it. The closest thing to it was the 300ZR with a VG30DE.

So. The standard non turbo x member might do, or it might not. Same with the turbo x member. You might buy one and find it still wont fit.

You should jump onto aus300zx.com and send a pm to Aussiezedhead His real name's Barrie, and ask him what he did for a x member. If you search for posts by him you'll find pictures of his car with a VG30DET in it, but he added another turbo, so it's a DETT now.

car has now had the rust done and is back in my yard with a cover over it .....
looking for expressions of interest am thinking of selling it licenced but no motor or gear box and now needs a respray as it has black patches where the rust was done....
only thinkin of selling it at the moment !!!!!

Haha I'm just .. typing my first thoughts lol. Mine needs some work before I can move onto the fun part, so buying a good condition roller and selling my bunky NA makes sence.

update time
I've still got the zed. As of 3 hours ago it has had its first coat of paint so it is no more red zed it is now blue...ish
the cross member is out and with a mate getting the mounts for the V8 made up. pics to follow as soon as I upload them Very Happy
