my 1984 z31 300zx 2+2 n/a auto.hey,
thought i'd start a thread for my recently aquired zed.
dont have any pics since ive owned it, but i have some from when the previous owner had it.

Gday
My list looks just like yours, cept i crossed off my turbo conversion..Can i suggest going with Nistune instead of megasquirt?
|
s2k12
|
yeah, at first i was just going to go nistune. im still not completely decided, but right now im leaning more towards megasquirt.
|
mr camouflage
|
Sorry for the noob question, but whats a Nistune? (I know about the megasquirt).

Thanks, found the sticky on z31performance too.

Resisting the temptation to part it out lol, so much dodgyness. I'm sure alot of people wouldnt care about things like this after a respray and fixed engine, but i do. lol.
That manual na in "vgc" in the quokka is becoming so tempting, someone give me 2k for my car so i can afford it lol.
Oh well, I guess i'm just going to have to live with a jack-fucked bog-filled chassis lol.
|
s2k12
|
Fuck!
fixed heaps on it, but still not running right. needs intake manifold gasket. and an oil change and some belts would be good, but i have no fucking money lol. someone buy it from me for 2k lol.

I got a complete head gasket set from ebay USA for around $60.
Get the Stone brand gaskets. Aparently they make the Z31 gaskets for nissan, now nissan dont make them anymore. The ones you get from nissan are rebranded stone ones aparently.

|
Ahh cool, thanks.
I'm begining to think I should just try get an importer to find me a z31 turbo manual halfcut with a good condition black dash lol. My n/a engine has been nothing but trouble since ive had it.
Now, if only the bank would call me back about the job.. Ahh well, going to try a local auto1 that has a "staff wanted" sign lol.
Need a job, because job = money, and money = car stuff, lol.
|
s2k12
|
out of curiosity - how much does everyone think i'd get for it? how about after a spray can respray so its one tone of red all over? minus the front kaminari bumper? what about with 14" stockers from an r31 skyline? lol.

Have you checked all the vacuum lines? Mine had some really dodgey cracked and split ones.
and have a look in the ebay cars for sale thread
|
s2k12
|
yeah, some look a bit dodgy, but intake manifold gasket is definately leaking so i think thats the main problem now. fixed some more random shit on it since last post too.
cheers for the heads up in the ebay thread

parts car!

Dude you stole my car!
Looks exactly like Mine. It has rust in the side quarter window just the same, and my vent has fallen out.
So whats the plan? You going to fix up the turbo car and sell the na? Which ones got the better body?
Might be less hassle getting the turbo car legal than having to get the na legally converted to turbo, if you want no hassle with the cops that is.
|
s2k12
|
Yeah, i've thought about doing that, but it shouldn't take much to get the na legally turbo either. Don't really like the idea of re-regoing it, seeing as i have no paperwork (apart from auction papers, but they don't have the previous owners details, or many car details, on them. So I don't think they will accept that).
Another plus for the na, it's an 84 model, so theres no legal need for a cat.
The bodies are about the same. The turbo is fairly rusted, but the na looks like it was rusted at one stage too. Although it looks like it's been sanded back and bogged up by a previous owner somewhere along the line.
|
mr camouflage
|
Well. I'm after a new front bumper, if your not going to use the one off the 87.
|
s2k12
|
Haha, I was going to use the turbo bumper for the lip and sell my kaminari front skirt from the 84 to Mitch, but under that front skirt theres a normal 84 n/a bumper if you want that? lol.
|
s2k12
|
hmm..
- the fucked parts of the NA make me want to build the turbo up.
- the lack of paperwork, lack of rego, and fucked bits on the turbo (still less than the NA) makes me want to not build it up.
- the automatic transmission on them both makes me want to go out and find a really clean z31 with a manual transmission (NA is preferable for cost reasons) and use that as a base.
on a good note, the turbo has pretty tight suspension..

I like that front lip. I wonder how hard it would be to take a mold off that front lip and reproduce it. I've been wanting to have a go at some fibreglass work.
Similar look to this one, which would be my first choice, but impossible to find I bet.

I dont think paperwork is a big issue, since the car is unlicenced. Maybe call up the licencing department and see what the deal is, before making any decisions.
I once bought an abandoned madza 808 coupe (think RX-3 but with a 1600 engine). from Wanneroo council, and the only paperwork I had was the receipt for the $15 that the car cost me. Fixed it up, and got it over the pits no problems.

ahh ok, i assumed i would need something of the previous owners paperwork as proof, like we were told we needed for the trailer and my first r31 that i was going to fix up. if auction paperwork is sufficient then i only have the other problems to overcome lol.

so jealous
I WANT YA FRONT BUMPER:P
|
s2k12

lol, and im jealous because you have a good condition chassis
|
s2k12

and so im thinking of getting either gunmetal rays gram lights T57-RC wheels or r33 gtr wheels when i can afford it. opinions? car will possibly be silver or panda by then lol.

dunno what they look like

the rays wheels.
the dirty tree wheels.

may be going rb20det soon.
reasons:
1. manual - i may be able to get hold of a manual 200zr halfcut.
2. aftermarket support for the rb20det is better than the vg30e(t).
3. the sound.
things im worried about:
1. weight distribution. but we'll see how we go.
everyone go to my for sale thread and help me out lol.
|
mr camouflage
|
I wouldn't worry abut weight distribution, since you have a 2+2 anyway. Theres more weight over the back of the car than a 2 seater. Most 200ZR's were 2+2's anyway.
|
s2k12
|
hmm, thats true.
|
s2k12
|
change of plans.. and this time, they'll probably stick.
going to strip the car back and respray it after we move house in a month or 2. at this time, ill do a few things to strengthen the chassis and probably remove some of the bog i found in various places of the car.
colour choice will probably be silver over grey 2-tone, unless i see something else and like it even more.
now for the fun part. coilovers, possible non-vg engine swap (or atleast turbo vg), manual gearbox, lsd, possible roll cage pending legalities, and a few other goodies will be thrown back in when its time to put it all back together. im hoping to have it ready for powercruise 2008, if not sooner.
my main focus with this car is handling, but that doesnt mean the power/show/interior departments will be neglected either.
|
s2k12
|
Ok..
Seen a z31 on ebay just then, in another state, that ends soon. but is cheap. and may work out cheaper than finding a good condition rego'd manual over here.
Can anyone get good rates on freight? I'm working off an estimate I got a while back of ~$750 from QLD to Perth.
I'll do some thinking between now and the end of the auction to see whether it's worth it, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.
|
s2k12
|
Lol I didn't get it, too much stuffing around being in another state.
But I am on the lookout for a good condition manual z31 in WA.
|
s2k12
|
There's a good chance I'll be able to throw money at the car soon, yay!

bit of damage to the front there, what happened?

Haha don't know, previous owner doesn't either. Good thing fiberglass is easy enough to fix.

And so I cruised to Harvey with a few mates on saturday. After running the fuel system cleaner through it, runs alot better. Going to do an oil change soon, then if the timing retard is still too much of an issue, I'll slowly advance it without a light just a tad then go for a drive till I get it close enough (would use a light, but as I said in another thread, the belt was put back in the wrong position so a light would be pointless).
|
rat1314
|
so you haven't put the timing belt on properly yet?
|
s2k12
|
Nah. Apart from the mark on the belt been in the wrong spot, the rest of it's fine, and I really can't be bothered putting all that time into something that's only supposed to last me a few months at the most anyway.

Found a pic of a Z31 with the same front spoiler as yours

Ooh awesome! He seems to have the rest of the kit too. I'd love the rest of the kit lol.
I saw a z31 on ebay with the same front spoiler the other day too, which I found interesting seeing as that was in Australia.
