Mr C's '86 300ZX Turbo

Here's my '86 300ZX turbo.

I originally looked at it because I thought it might have an LSD diff that I could use in one of my other cars, and was about the same price as an LSD diff. I found out they don't, but when I had a look at it I thought it was in pretty good condition, even though it wasn't running, and would be a good replacement for my old 240K sedan I was using as a daily.

So anyway I bought it in December 2006 and replaced the alternator, which is why it wasn't running. But it had an exhaust leak at drivers side head due to a snapped stud or 3. Had to pull the head off to get the snapped studs off. It's taken this long to do because, well, I'm lazy I guess. After coming home from work I don't feel like working on cars much. Also I do all the work myself. Cant stand paying for someone to do something I can do myself.

I got to drive it once with the exhaust leak after I replaced the alt, only to the petrol station to put some fuel in it.

My 240K died a while back with electrical problems, so its about time I got the ZXT back on the road.

Hopefully I'll have it back in one piece soon, ready for some summer cruising. Very Happy

Here are some photos of when I bought it.

I'll post some more pics when I get it back in one piece.

haha, alot nicer than i was expecting for $700. infact that looks like its in better condition than mine!

edit: out of curiosity, where exactly do you live?

Yep bad puns all round (Tom Dick and Harry). Pity there isn't a member whos name rhymes with Harry.

Yeah not bad for $700. Paints pretty crap though. And theres some really dodgey wiring on the injectors that i need to replace. Some of the Injector plugs had been replaced with 2 bits of wire with little spade connector thingos like you use on speakers.
s2k12

Lol, you think thats bad, when I got my car, one cyl bank was getting different timing to the other side!
mr camouflage

I think I can top that.

When I pulled off the timing cover there was NO tension on the timing belt at all! There was about 1 inch slack on it (moving up and down between the cam pulleys). It's just luck that it never skipped any teeth and fuxor'd the engine.
s2k12

Holy shit, lucky it didn't slip!
mr camouflage

Well. I'll be ordering a box full of parts from the US this week. So hopefully the car will be back on the road around christmas.

Almost a year since I bought it, and only drove it once. Crying or Very sad

But I guess thats what you get for being slack.
s2k12

I know the feeling lol, mines been off the road longer than it's been on (since i bought it atleast).

Yay for (hopefully) not having to drive the bloody magna for much longer haha.

Colour change

So..... I'm thinking about painting my car black.

It needs a repaint. Current paint has had it.

Too many Red Zeds around I think. Metallic Blue might look good too.
s2k12

go silver!
sorceress

haha i am painting mine black with purple flames .....

Parts arrived today. damn box was ripped open and the water pump and another part were missing.

Have emailed courtesy nissan to find out what the deal is with replacing the missing parts.

It's bloody annoying

.\/.
sorceress

that sux i hope they replace the parts
mr camouflage

So, my replacement water pump finally arrived today, along with the missing tensioner spring.

They made me wait until fedex had paid them for the missing parts before reshipping, which I was kinda pissed about, but now I'm just glad I've got what I paid for.

I guess I'd better get on with it. All thats holding me back now is the heat and my lazy tendencies Smile

I also bought a boost gauge and boost controller a while back.

Hooray for cooler weather!!

Been too damn hot to be in the tin shed lately. Last night I got the thermostat housing,  water pump, and crank timing belt pulley removed.
mr camouflage

Had a busy weekend, but not in the shed. I did manage to get the front crank seal out, but found I had no grease, so I couldn't try putting the new seal in. So I called it a night and went inside to watch a movie.

Picked up a rear spoiler Saturday arvo. Going to have to relocate the aerial, or just delete it, since I never listen to radio anymore. haven't had a working radio/cd player in any of my cars for he last 8 years, since I sold my TX-3 4WD Turbo, and have gotten used to driving without music.

Sunday, after moving some furniture, I went to the WA S30 zed clubs registration day and caught up with the old school zed guys.
s2k12

My car doesnt have an antenna, radio still works fine in most places lol.

What sort of spoiler? Stock turbo?
mr camouflage

Nope one of these

Nice!

Replaced the lifters in the passenger side (distributer side) head today. Now has a full set of new lifters I guess it didn't really need. Can't hurt though.
mr camouflage

Well. Taking my sweet time getting this car back together. Should probably be done in time for summer Very Happy

Anyway the last month I've replaced the front crank seal, the cam seals, put in a new water pump and thermostat.

Tonight I cleaned up the timing covers. 20 years of sand, belt rubber and greasy oil deposits gone.
