So what options are available to us aussies in the way of manual gearbox conversions?

Would any of the Skyline boxes work? Maybe something from an RB25DET? or a VL commodore turbo.

afaik, rb box's are too small (well, the bellhousing atleast). vlt box's are a tad larger, so might work.

there was a manual navara at the auction i got the turbo from. i was tempted to buy it and try throw the manual crap on a z31, because its all rwd vg30e. a lack of funds and transport and storage is all that stopped me trying atleast lol.

edit: i believe z32 box's work too. im more worried about things like pedals etc to be honest..

hmm.. alternatively, we could just steal mitch's manual conversion parts, get copies made, give them back, then grab a z32 box haha.

Z31 n/a box is the same as the R31 box except for bellhousing/front half (whatever you want to call it). Also the same as S13 SR20 manuals except for ratios and bellhousing.

Thing with vl boxes is there is no bellhousing, its all one big bit.Way to go is find a 2WD Navara or Pathfinder.Dunno if there even is a 2WD Pathfinder but yeh, they got the gearbox we need.Otherwise, you can always chop the front off the vl box and weld the bellhousing off an auto onto it  Cool

I cannot believe you can't find a Z31 manual gearbox. All Z spares in NSW has at least one for $400.

after coming close to buying a 200zr halfcut and running an rb20 just so i could be manual, i had an idea.

if i was to buy all the parts minus gearbox from usa, then buy one of those $400 gearbox's mentioned above, it would almost be financially plausable.

until now, my idea was to do the above but with a z32 box.

unless.. that place that has the $400 gearbox's, do they have all the conversion parts to go with it?

Cant find a listing for "All Z Spares" in NSW.

Theres an "All Z Parts"  : http://www.allzparts.com.au

and www.zspares.com  which is actually Z shop's ( www.zshop.net.au ) online store.  They are in Victoria.

So try the first one http://www.allzparts.com.au  Thats probably the one RichZilla was meaning.

I am selling a 1987 300zx turbo for $1500 in Tasmania. It has the stronger later model 5spd transmission. I will put a link to the add in the for sale section soon, so keep an eye out. There could be lots of parts you might want from this car.

haha yeah, i noticed that the other day.

i miss my r31.. $600 manual conversions were so easy to come by lol. anyone have one of those disks with part numbers and stuff on it? if so, could ya look the r31 manual pedal box and the z31 manual pedal box up, because im curious if nissan kept that the same (like they did alot of things). if so, thats one thing sorted atleast. crossmembers.. im sure we could modify the auto one to fit or get a custom one. box.. one of the aformentioned $400 box's or a z32 box should fit. driveshaft will have to be custom.. i'd get a strengthened one just incase, seeing as it needs to be changed anyway. clutch & flywheel is easy, aftermarket.

cant think if ive left anything out, but im rather sleep deprived at the moment so i probably did. not being able to sleep sucks.

actually, i wonder if nissan sell any manual conversion parts new..

I'm guessing the turbo boxes are stronger than the non turbo boxes, or are they exactly the same?

i believe there was 3 box's, 2 turbo & 1 na. one of the turbo ones was the weakest, followed by the na one, followed by the other turbo one. i cant for the life of me remember which year they changed over, but google might know.

With a navara/pathfinder box, wouldn't the transfer case be separate to the actual gearbox? Most 4x4's I've been under are set up like that so I'm thinking it might be worth a look

I think perhaps we should speak to an importer about doing a group buy on proper z31 manual conversion parts lol.. Anyone interested?

Might make it worth their while if a few of us do it at the same time, whereas a single request wouldnt be as high a priority.

I did find one place that had a conversion, but the average price of their conversions is around $1,200 + $150 to send it to Perth.

Oh, has anyone spoken to any other places about it?

Probably, but it's not just the gearbox that we need.. pedal box, tailshaft, crossmember, etc. Don't really want to go custom stuff if I can help it. Unless it's cheaper, but I doubt it would be. If I don't get a reply from any of the places I've emailed about it, then I'll look into doing custom stuff.

a new clutch master cylinder isn't too expensive from ABS and they normally have them on the shelf.
For the tail shaft, take the one thats in your car to a drive line shop and have it modified to fit after fitting the gearbox so you can get the right length.
Would an r31 cross member fit? how much of a difference is there between a manual and an auto one? maybe modify the auto one to fit

I might try the auto r31 gear when I do my conversion, just to see if it fits.. also might see if the z31 auto one would need much modification to fit.

Atm I'm getting quotes from a few places, I'll let you know how it goes.
